St. Helen's Island City's Choice As Site For 1967 World's Fair

«The site for the 1967 World Fair will be St. Helen's Island, the Gazette learned last night.

Choice of the mid-river isle -- a park and playground wonderland now -- as the location for Canada's centennial year extravaganza will be revealed today.

The official announcement will end weeks of speculation as to the fair site and comes as something of a surprise.

Fair Commissioner General Paul Bienvenu had announced several weeks ago that the choice had narrowed to four possible locales: (1) the Point St. Charles area; (2) a tract in Ville LaSalle; (3) an area in east-end Maisonneuve; and (4) a vast stretch of unused land in the Rivière des Prairies-St. Leonard de Port Maurice district, in the northeast corner of the island.

The sudden switch to St. Helen's Island is believed to have started last Friday at a behind-closed-doors meeting or the 14-man corporation which will administer the fair here.»
